My little girl has a wobbly tooth !

A huge part of me is scared , sad ,petrified !

I want to hold back time . My baby is growing up !

She is so excited ! She has shared with me all the things her friends have told her will move the process along ! She wishes she liked apples . Apparently a big bite will really speed the whole thing up !

She can expect the tooth fairy to check on the tooth tonight before she will decide how much it’s worth !

She is so happy and I feel so sad !

And yet I know from all my reading that impermanence is one of the Buddhist teachings which can help us to let go of this pain!

Nothing stays the same , we will never have this day again.

Parenthood reminds us of this every day

“The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance.”
― Alan Wilson Watts

“Nothing in the world is permanent, and we’re foolish when we ask anything to last, but surely we’re still more foolish not to take delight in it while we have it.”
― W. Somerset Maugham

And so I need to take my guidance from her and ride this roller coaster called life with her !

I’m going to join her dance xx

Perception and Mindfulness

While getting organised to do a recent Connected Kids Workshop , I saw a picture of a drawing . It can be seen as a rabbit or a duck .

Apparently at Easter more people see a rabbit and in the Autumn people see a duck . Mindfulness has definitely given me the space to see that the world isn’t always how I see it . We see the world through a brain with memories , expectations , feelings . It’s like what we see has to go through the field before it reaches our perception . What if our field is full of nettles we might see things as being prickly . What if it’s a mix of nettles and flowers but it’s a day when we’ve met more nettles then it might be the same .

What if it’s a day where we’ve noticed the flowers then it will be perceived that way .

We can’t change the flowers or nettles or our lives but it’s really useful to notice what sort of a field our brain might be . Mindfulness really helps this and Perception takes up a full week of the eight week programme.

We don’t see the world as it is, we see it as we are

Well it’s been a hell of a few months !!

My mum was diagnosed with breast cancer , she finished her radiotherapy treatment today !

She’s had surgery and radiotherapy and taken it all in her stride !!

We’ve been in a sort of cocoon for months where we could think of nothing else !

We had weeks of not knowing how things were going to go .

And now they feel quite confident that they have cured her .

What joy what bliss what an eye opener !

Throughout it all friendship was there both amongst us as family members sisters mothers daughters and with friends .

We may not have for to speak much but just knowing you had friends there made all the difference !

Thank you to all my friends both those related and not !!

We’ve come the other side and we are celebrating with a new teapot for mum and a bottle of champagne !!

Sister. She is your mirror, shining back at you with a world of possibilities. She is your witness, who sees you at your worst and best, and loves you anyway. She is your partner in crime, your midnight companion, someone who knows when you are smiling, even in the dark. She is your teacher, your defense attorney, your personal press agent, even your shrink. Some days, she’s the reason you wish you were an only child.

Remember the beginning

Daily life can take over !

The nappy changes and middle of the night feeds become needing eyes in the back of your head for a toddler !

The toddler becomes a school child in the blink of an eye ! Then it’s school runs , lunches , uniform washes and after school activities !

Mix it all up with a toddler and 2 school going children and you soon find yourself chasing your tail !!

It’s easy to feel like a mice running around a wheel !!

Where does your husband or wife fit in to all of this ? Do you even see each other any more ?

I think it’s a common problem ! And one that can lead to all sorts of rows ! Spouses feel undervalued , overworked and really just not seen !

I know I’ve said it before but I need to remind myself regularly too !

What brought you together in the first place ?

What made 2 imperfect people choose each other ?

Last night we watched date night a movie with Steve carrell and Tina fey !!

We laughed and laughed !! It’s full of reminders of the daily grind of life ! Gum shields and anti snore strips !

But the couple end up getting chased by the mob accidentally and all hell breaks loose !

However in all the drama they end up seeing each other again !

And ends with a lovely reminder for all of us

Phil Foster: I’d do it again you know? Us, you, me the kids, all of it. I’d do it again. I’d choose you every time.

Be sure and check out the movie you won’t be disappointed maybe make it a date night xx

See the good

“To be fully seen by somebody, then, and be loved anyhow – this is a human offering that can border on miraculous.”
― Elizabeth Gilbert, Committed: A Skeptic Makes Peace with Marriage

What a perfect quote !

The truth is , that none of us are perfect and so to love each other even though we are flawed is key !

We can’t expect the person we married will always be exactly what we want them to be is unreasonable !

Gratitude is key ! Appreciate the little things they do and say thank you for all those little things !

You may be surprised by the results , your partner will do more for you to say thank you for !

Give it a go !

“Women only nag when they feel unappreciated.”

Hold my hand

As I walked my 6 year old daughter to school today , we walked and chatted as we usually do .

The sun was shining , the birds were singing as I took her beautiful soft hand in my hand , and savoured every minute !

Her hand is so small , and it won’t always be so small ! It won’t always fit in mine !

She won’t always want to hold my hand !

So we walked , and I just held her hand and wrapped the memory up in pretty pink paper , to save it in my mind !

I went to work and savoured this early morning walk !

We can often wander through life , rushing from home to school to work ,
and not really take the time to appreciate the here and now !

I went to my mums after work , she minds the kids on a Tuesday , and I shared my thoughts with her and I took her hand and I held it ! It mightn’t be as small as it used to be but I hope it felt as nice !!

“Once I had her hand, I never wanted to let go of her.”

Mothers day

Read in mass on mothers day not a dry eye in the house !!

“Why are you crying?”, a young boy asked his Mom.

“Because I’m a woman,” she told him. “I don’t understand,” he said.

His Mom just hugged him and said, “And you never will, but that’s O.K.”… Later the little boy asked his father, “Why does Mom seem to cry for no reason?”. “All women cry for no reason,” was all his Dad could say… The little boy grew up and became a man, still wondering why women cry.

Finally he put in a call to God and when God got back to him, he asked “God, why do women cry so easily?”

GOD answered…

When I made woman, I decided she had to be special. I made her shoulders strong enough to carry the weight of the world, yet, made her arms gentle enough to give comfort…I gave her the inner strength to endure childbirth and the rejection that many times will come even from her own children.

I gave her a hardness that allows her to keep going and take care of her family and friends, even when everyone else gives up, through sickness and fatigue without complaining…I gave her the sensitivity to love her children under any and all circumstances. Even when her child has hurt her badly…

She has the very special power to make a child’s boo-boo feel better and to quell a teenager’s anxieties and fears…I gave her strength to care for her husband, despite faults and I fashioned her from his rib to protect his heart…I gave her wisdom to know that a good husband never hurts his wife, but sometimes tests her strengths and her resolve to stand beside him unfalteringly.

For all of this hard work, I also gave her a tear to shed. It is hers to use whenever needed and it is her only weakness.

When you see her cry, tell her how much you love her, and all she does for everyone, and even though she may still cry, you will have made her
heart feel good.

It all looks different in the light

We got up at 230 this morning to walk 5 km for a charity!

We started walking at 4 in the dark and watched the sun rise and heard the dawn chorus of birdsong .

The walk is done every year for the charity pieta house who look after people with suicidal thoughts to try and prevent suicide .

There were people there who were walking in memory of lost loved ones who had been lost to suicide .

It was emotional , it was strange being up in the middle of the night. It was beautiful to watch the sun rise and hear the birds waking up .

The walk is called darkness into light . I thought it symbolised hope ,light at the end of the tunnel .

The darkness of depression feels like a hole out of which you can’t come !

We walked around a park for an hour and it was only when we were walking back to the car that we noticed deer , a strange little house , and even a pheasant .

My sister said on the way back to the car “my god everything looks so different in the light ”

And I realised the importance of that comment .

We had been in the same place but in the dark we didn’t see the beauty that was around us !

Being depressed before , I know how it feels and that’s exactly it . You are so lost in the dark space in your head that you can’t even see what’s in front of your nose !

When you rise in the morning, give thanks for the light, for your life, for your strength. Give thanks for your food and for the joy of living. If you see no reason to give thanks, the fault lies in yourself.

It is during our darkest moments that we must focus to see the light.

Look around you

I’m struck by the world around me now that I’m practising mindfulness!

How beautiful is the world around us !

We need to stop and look around us .

The miracle is all around us !

The cherry blossom is in bloom .

There are only 3 weeks every year that the cherry blossom is in bloom .

How does it know when to bloom , how does it know that now is the time !

I look at my 3 children . They are also miracles ?

Conception is like a lottery and baby development so complex and yet it occurs every day all around the world without any direction from us .

We worry so much and feel we are in control of so much although the miracles around us are not in our control at all !

These beautiful pictures were taken in our back garden. We’ve lived here along time and I’m only really seeing for the first time .

“From barren brown stems to glistening leaf-buds; from the leaf-buds to snowy virginity of bloom…It was like a flute song forgotten in another existence and remembered again. What? How? Why? This singing she heard that had nothing to do with her ears. The rose of the world was breathing out smell. It followed her through all her waking moments and caressed her in her sleep.”
― Zora Neale Hurston, Their Eyes Were Watching God

The world has gone mad

The last week ,the world seems to have gone mad !

Bombs in Boston , lock downs and man hunts ! Sky news on repeat in the house!

My husband up glued to the man hunt , the aftermath of those bombings .

I’ve read lots of blogs from mums that were in Boston . I’ve read about how they dealt with their beautiful children ! About how they tried to protect them from the reality that was outside their door !

And I’ve been reading today about the fear that has been left behind !

I completely understand this fear ! And yet I know in my heart of hearts that this fear is futile !

Anything can happen to us our children or our families at any time .

Car accidents, sickness, falls! Tragedy may befall any of us at any time and it doesn’t need to involve a terrorist of any kind !

It is exactly for this reason that we need to appreciate every moment that we have with our husbands ,children ,sisters, brothers, mothers and fathers ,friends ,colleagues ,the people we meet on the bus .

We can’t get this moment back and worrying about what the future may hold detracts from this moment . And this moment is the only thing that we can be sure of .

They call it the present because that’s exactly what it is a gift .

I am not afraid of tomorrow, for I have seen yesterday and I love today.
William Allen White
